I received a book from my father yesterday. It is Martin Varner: Texas Pioneer. It is half a history of Martin Varner, talking of him being one of the first 300 chosen to settle Texas. The other half is the genealogy leading to my birth, along with several thousand other people. I guess I understand my obsession with Texas outdoors, being an 8th generation Texan. During the short amount of this book I have read, I found I am eligible to join several historical societies such as the descendants of austins old 300, Sons of the Republic of Texas, the san jacinto descendents, and also through his wife's family, I would be eligible to join the Sons of the American Revolution. I will read more as I find time. I think I will enjoy it. It was written by Don Raney, a very old man to whom I am related. He has been working on this for 30+ years now.
